Crochet Toolkit Prototype

This was my first project for my Modelmaking and Prototype class and the goal was to create a carrying case for something important to you. At the time I was learning how to crochet, and I thought it would be fun to create a functioning “toolkit” of sorts for my crochet equipment. The key feature of this bag is the crochet hook holder, and I also wanted it to be able to fit a few skeins or balls of yarn while still being easy to wear.

For the design, I was inspired by some trapezoidal designer-type bags. I started with a sketch, then made a few paper mock-ups to quickly test shape and appearance. From there, I made a more to-size cardboard test model, which I then used to aid in my measurements. I used Adobe Illustrator to test and create paper patterns that were then used to cut the fabric into the exact measurements I wanted.

Before this project I had some sewing machine experience, but I had never made such a complicated shape or attempted to create my own pattern. Needless to say, it was a lot of trial and error, but I learned a lot in the process.
