Alarm Clock Model
This was my final project for my Modelmaking and Prototype class. The prompt was to make an object with a screen. The suggested materials were high density foam for the base and acrylic for the screen. The overarching goal with this project was to learn/practice precise machines such as the mill and router table. This project was a challenge as I had not used high density foam yet and was used to materials that could be manipulated by hand.
For my model, I chose to make an alarm clock as I was inspired by the alarm clock-esque shape of the test pieces we worked on when learning some of the machines. I wanted to make something simple and whimsical so I chose to give it large dials/buttons which were found materials (bottle caps). This project was not focused on details, but I wanted to give it a speaker so it could be more easily recognizable. I initially tried to freehand it but was unhappy with the result, so I decided to fill the speaker and re-attempt it using a Dieter Rams-style guide.
I feel like I really pushed myself to get outside my comfort zone and create something I could be really happy with. I’m glad that I got the chance to learn some more complex machines and techniques instead of relying on what I already knew.
